There is a simple Lenten prayer we might pray as we meditate on the Gospel proclaimed this day; Lord, open my eyes and my heart. The story of the man born blind is a story of vision as well as a story of deep and abiding faith. We, who hear that story, seek to have that same depth of faith that allows us to see clearly, to see through the eyes of Jesus. The eyes of faith give us a new perspective and a vision of life as it should be. We live as citizens of the Kingdom of God and we bring the love of God to all. Lent reminds us that in many ways, we too are still learning to see.
In examining our consciences, we look to see where we still struggle with the vision of Jesus. We look to Jesus to open our eyes and ask for his healing grace that we too might share his vision. We ask Jesus to open our eyes and our hearts to the needs of others. We ask Jesus to remove those places where we are still blind to His gift of unconditional love. We pray with deep and abiding faith, “Lord I want to see.” We pray that God will remove our blindness and lead us to be His disciples of light in the world.
Contemporary Christian singer songwriter Michael W. Smith wrote these lyrics: “So let it go and turn it over to the one who chose to give his life for you. Just leave it to me, I'll lead you home.” Easter is our greatest feast and our greatest healing. Let us allow Jesus to lead us once again to that great feast and that great promise. He will lead us home. He will open our eyes and our hearts.
