The first reading today speaks of the chosen people, grateful for the blessing of their deliverance from slavery in Egypt, brought the first fruits of the Promised Land to the Lord. This bringing of the best to our Lord is something that our parishes, Saint John Capistran and Saint Thomas More, have done faithfully throughout the years. I am so very grateful for your generous and loving support. You have given from your substance to help both parishes thrive and carry out the work of Jesus Christ. You are a gift that keeps on giving.
It is once again the time of year when we are asked by the Diocese to share in their work through the Parish Share Appeal. This annual appeal brings contributions to the Diocese as a whole to support the work of the pastoral, educational and pastoral ministries of the Diocese. Based on our annual income, we, as is every parish, are assessed at 17.6% of our total income to assist in that work. This is our responsibility and we must meet our goal. Whatever we collect beyond that goal remains here with us.
This year, the parish assessments are as follows: Saint Thomas More has a goal of $176.484 and Saint John Capistran has a goal of $89, 774. Both goals represent a slight decrease from the previous year. I am humbly asking you, our generous parishioners, to consider making your annual pledge to this important campaign.
I recognize that these are difficult times for our Church. From the effects of the Grand Jury report, to the concerns and fears over the On Mission process, contributions have decreased throughout the diocese. I certainly understand those concerns. I humbly ask that you prayerfully discern what you can contribute and make a pledge. You have always come through for us and I am certain that you will this year as well. I am so grateful for all that you do, using your time, talents and contributions to assist us in proclaiming the good news and serving our parish families in the name and person of Jesus. You truly are a gift and blessing to me and our local Church in Pittsburgh.
As we begin this Lenten journey of renewal, know that I hold you in the highest regard and am grateful for the blessing of you each day. I am certain that you will do the best for us and our Diocese. I will continue to hold you in my heart and prayers as we journey toward the new life of Easter and the great mission of Pentecost.
