Kay Houston, Librarian
The purpose of the Parish Library is to provide a friendly, warm and loving atmosphere to search for and obtain Christian literature to enhance your Christian walk with our Lord. Please stop and check out what we have to offer. Our audio tapes are especially popular. We are open after Sunday Masses (beginning at 10:30am), and after the 11:30am Mass on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please stop by!
The Friends of the Library meet the 3rd Thursday of each month at a restaurant. We meet not only to discuss library matters but also to promote friendship among members. We would love to have you!
Established almost 25 years ago, Saint Thomas More’s parish library is a treasure of materials accumulated to assist us in our faith development and understanding the many facets of our Roman Catholic religion.
It began with an initial donation of 250 books, and the numerous collections have grown to over 2000. Except for the classics of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, the contents have been published post-Vatican II, and for the most part are the current scholarship on a variety of topics. Except for a small number of adult books and the children’s section, all of the books are non-fiction.
Using Library of Congress classification, the shelves start with religion in general and move through Scripture, prayer, spirituality, Mary, Church history, biography of the saints and popes and MUCH, MUCH more. The card catalog is set up just as Dewey decimal, according to title, author and subject, so when you visit the library it’s easy to find any book you want on the labeled shelves. There is even an impressive children’s section and several special collections on the shelves to the right of the entrance. You can find books, CDs and DVDs on Lent/Easter, Advent/Christmas, Justice & Peace, Parental Issues, Pro-life and the Holocaust. With recent monetary donations the old audio/video cassettes are being replaced and an audio-book section is growing.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE: If you have a few hours a month (NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY), there’s a spot for you among our 20 plus ministry members on Sunday after the morning Masses or on Monday/Wednesday after 11:30am Mass. Orientation is provided. To keep the library running smoothly there are a few more processing jobs (manual and digital). And directions for using the library when staff is not available make it easy for the entire parish to browse and borrow anything on the shelves when the Family Life Center is open.
GOOD NEWS: Most recent acquisitions: Robert Barron’s book and 10 part DVD series CATHOLICISM; Pope Benedict’s encyclicals, etc. etc., etc. YOU can add a book, CD or DVD in honor/memory of a friend, family member or some special occasion.
Come choose your reading!
Throughout the year, we offer a variety of faith-related courses and talks that enable adults to continue to grow in their faith. These lectures are available to all parishioners. Past talks have been given by parishioners, our parish priests, parish employees, visiting priests, and professional speakers. We have also presented premade courses that come with materials and DVD lectures. Times vary depending on the course or talk. Please inquire at the parish office for upcoming lecture times and dates.
For those interested in self-guided faith formation, faith formation books, CDs, and DVDs are available to borrow at our parish library, or to purchase in the vestibules of the church.
