This fifth Sunday of Lent begins what has traditionally been known as Passiontide. The Church, from now until Easter, begins to focus more, both in her liturgical celebration and scripture references, on the suffering that Jesus is about to undergo for our salvation. Churches traditionally would even veil and cover statues and crosses from this day until the Easter Vigil in order to focus more on Christ’s passion. This was done in reference to the reading from John’s Gospel for the fifth Sunday of Lent (now used only in Cycle B); “Jesus hid Himself [from the Jews] and went out of the Temple.” (John 8:59).
Today’s Gospel presents the raising of Lazarus from the dead, and it foreshadows the promise of resurrection. Jesus invites his followers into an understanding that the glory of God always triumphs, but reminds them that suffering and tragedy are a part of discipleship. The gospel and the first reading from Ezekiel tell us that God will restore his promise and breathe new life, even when his people are in bleak and hopeless situations.
As we begin our journey into the most sacred time of the year, perhaps we can reflect upon the sacrifice that Christ has made for us. How can we remain hopeful in our difficult circumstances? How can we reflect God’s glory in our daily struggles?
Our final parish fish fry is this Friday, March 31st at St. Thomas More Church. Please stop by for some good food and fellowship. If you are unable to come in person, please consider taking home something from the kitchen. Call ahead or order online.
