"Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,' when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye" (Luke 6:39-42).
When our Lord spoke these words, his purpose and intention was not to condemn his hearers, the vast majority of whom were guilty of the defects he mentioned, but rather to open their minds and their hearts to their shortcomings so that they would change for the better and learn to live with their neighbor's faults, and do all in their power to correct their own.
It is for the very same purpose that the Church has selected this lesson for us today. We are all guilty of rash judgment and unjustified criticism, to a greater or lesser degree. Let us turn this criticism on ourselves and judge ourselves honestly and sincerely and in a short while we may, with God's grace helping us, notice a change in our Christian conduct. We shall not become saints in a week or a month but little by little,
imperceptibly at first perhaps, we shall find ourselves becoming more Christian and therefore more charitable towards our neighbor and less critical of the faults of others.
Ministry of Acolyte: Bishop David Zubik has approved Mr. Russell White, a member of the Deacon Class of 2022 from Resurrection Parish, to be installed in the Ministry of Acolyte at a Mass scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, at Saint Matthew Parish—Saint Bonaventure Church, Glenshaw.
So what is an Installed Acolyte? The General Instructions of the Roman Missal states: The acolyte is instituted for service at the altar and to assist the priest and deacon. It is his place principally to prepare the altar and the sacred vessels and, if necessary, to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful as an extraordinary minister.
As Russ begins this new ministry, please keep him in prayer. God willing, Russ will be ordained a permanent deacon on Saturday, October 1, 2022.
Season of Lent: This Wednesday, March 2nd begins the Season of Lent, a time of preparation for the
celebration of Our Lord’s Resurrection that takes place on Easter Sunday. Every household should have received a tri-fold pamphlet containing the dates and times of our liturgical services, educational classes and opportunities for service. Also contained in that mailing was a daily Lenten reflection booklet. If you did not receive this information, please contact the parish office. We encourage everyone to take the Lenten Season seriously, spending time in prayer and acts of charity. Your (spiritual) life depends on it!
Ashes will be distributed at all services on Ash Wednesday, March 2, 2022
