The roof is completed! The cost was roughly $150,000. The roof tiles over the sanctuary, choir area, and under the bell tower were removed and weather proofed with a new water proof membrane to protect the wood sheathing. Then the original tile was reinstalled. Also repaired was the structural beam of the roof on the McMillan side of the building. The old beam was completely rotted out and needed to be replaced. We had someone reach out to Fr. Mike with questions about the cost of the roof. This person made a considerable donation to the parish to help with the cost and is not even a parishioner! Many thanks to this anonymous donor.
Capistran Hall is 90% completed. The baseboards will be up very soon, which will finish the renovations to the main hall. The bathrooms in Capistran Hall will get new lights and ceiling tile, along with new vanities, and possibly new paint. This will be happening soon due to someone making a donation to complete the renovations to Capistran Hall. Thank you to this donor as well.
The library will also get a facelift. We will also install new lights and ceiling tiles in this area, and the space will be an ongoing project.
Over the summer, work will begin on the installation of new lights and ceiling tiles in the classrooms, offices, and hallways.
We trimmed the pin oak tree in front of the church to clear the branches from the roof, thus preventing further damage. We had a parishioner donate the funds to plant three new trees on the property. These were planted in place of the pine trees that were removed from beside the church building. Many thanks to this parishioner.
This should complete the renovations at St. John Capistran, which started with the new parking lot and the update of electrical panels in 2023. I hope everyone enjoys these improvements.
St. Thomas More
The moving of the Parish Library from its original location to the Rooney Room is complete. Thank you to parishioner Sidney Weissert and his fellow Eagle Scouts for doing this project. Now the library is more accessible to our parishioners on a daily basis. The old library location will become another meeting room for our ministries. We will repair the carpet and patch and paint the walls. This will give it a fresh new look.
We have combined the childcare room with the youth room to give us much needed storage space. This gives the events department additional and more accessible space to store tablecloths, drapes, and many types of centerpieces and odds and ends. We added many shelving units and more closet space for these needs.
Three pine trees near the parish office were taken down last year due to pine needles clogging the gutters and patio drains on the building. We will be replanting something in their place this spring.
We are looking to get new outer doors for the Narthex. One door does not close properly, and in the winter, it gets very cold in that area. Three vendors have come out to give us a quote, however we haven’t heard back from any of them. So, if you know a commercial door vendor, please let me know.
The name plaque for the kneeler donors will be up in the next two weeks.
The new Maglocks are in place around campus. This is a safety feature for the church. We will be looking into security measures for St. John Capistran Church in the near future.
Some parking lot issues were fixed over the summer. Several storm drains were rebuilt and curbs replaced. Rainwater was not being caught properly in the storm drains, which was causing water to get under the asphalt and create numerous cracks. Many of the cracks in the parking lots have been sealed to extend the life of the lots. The pavers on the sidewalk/priest driveway may also need to be fixed or replaced. The many broken pavers can cause a tripping hazard. There are several cracks in the concrete sidewalks that we will try to repair in the spring.
We are still waiting for the parts for the electrical panels at St. Thomas More. Once these become available, we will discuss when we will close the church and offices in order to have the panels replaced.
Over the summer we had a massive bee problem in the roof beam of the church. The beekeeper found and took care of the nest - and estimated there were roughly 30,000 bees! We hope that they do not return next year.
We are working with the Diocese on the issues concerning our new baptismal font railing, and how best to proceed.
Due to several parishioners asking if we plan to replace the fabric in the pews, we are looking into this cost. They were last reupholstered around 1991.
The light pole in lot #3, in front of the office, is now tilting. We believe this was caused by the recent high winds. Ferry Electric and the Diocesan insurance company are working with us to address this. Please observe the ‘no parking’ area around the pole.
Thank you to all of you for your ongoing support and patience as we work to have the best, safest and most enjoyable facilities possible for our parishioners.
